Bioflavonoids are also known as Vitamin P. The term
bioflavonoids refers to many different ingredients and includes
helperin, hesperidin, eriodictyol, quercetin, quercertrin, rutin etc.
Bioflavonoids are necessary for the proper function and absorption of
vitamin c, aids in increasing capillary strength, helps build
resistance to infection, prevents and heals bleeding gums, helps in the
treatment of edema and dizziness due to disease of the inner ear.
Citrus bioflavonoids and related substances are used widely in Europe
to treat disease of the blood vessels and lymph system, including
hemorrhoids, chronic venous insufficiency, leg ulcers, easy bruising,
nose bleeds and lyphedema following breast cancer surgery.
Bioflavonoids are best taken with vitamin c and calcium,
and are usually available in a c complex or by itself. Most often there
are 500 mg of bioflavonoids to 50 mg of rutin and hesperdin.
To combat allergies, arthritis, or other inflammatory
ailments, in divided doses over the course of the day, between 600 and
1,200 mg on an empty stomach. To guard against heart disease or cancer,
300 - 600 mg per day, and as part of an aggressive cancer treatment a
minimum therapeutic dosage starts at 1,500 mg a day.
Bioflavonoids have also been used extensively in the
treatment of athletic injuries because they relieve pain, bumps and
bruises. They can contribute to pain reduction in the legs or across
the back and reduce symptoms associated with prolonged bleeding and low
serum calcium.
